problem reading DVD backup games(messiah)

What version is the PS2? Have you tried cleaning the laser?? What brand of media are you using . Give us a little more info.

I'm using VERBATIM media (i also used SILVER LINE before, had the problem in both)

i did clean te lense using special cd.

and i think i have version 4/5.

Its hard to say without having the console in hand. Versions 4,5 are pretty old, to guess i would say the laser is on its way out.

that cd bacups boots fine, and when the dvd does boots, the game works perfectly?

Usually the first thing to go is the dvd playback. The PS2 use two different types of laser diodes. one for cd, one for dvd which is why cd games boot fine and dvd doesnt. As far as DVD playing fine once loaded that depends on the game. Some games load data differently compaired to others.

Couldnt have said it better. CD based media is also much easyer for the laser to read.
