Playstation 3

Since Sony has recently released the new pictures and specs for the Playstation 3, I think it is about time we started discussing the new technology to be unfolded. From what I know, games will be placed on hddvd ("high definition DVD"). That media can house tons more space than your average DVD-r. The oonly manufactorer out there that I know of so far that makes these games is BluRay technology. Question is, before the systems actually come out, and we get into the technical stuff on mod chips, how do you back up this type of media? I know of one BlueRay capable burner that I found on accident, and no doubt is cost in the low thousands. But then again, I was the first o all of my friends to get a DVD burner, and it cost me around $899 back then. now look at them, you can get a decent DVD burner for under $100. So if anyone has any questions, comments or ideas on this new Playstation 3 technology, I would love to hear it.

No - games are going on Blu-Ray not HD-DVD. Blu-Ray holds around 50GB per single-side / single-layer. Microsoft were going to go with the HD-DVD Standard (about 25GB per Single Side / Single Layer) for Xbox 360 but decided to simply stick with Dual Layer DVD (DVD9).

Thanks for settign me straight. I had the two technologies mixed up. Regardless, do you know of any Blu-Ray capable burners. I should probably start looking now. Also on the DVD side, I wonder if it would be possible to pack up multiple movies onto one Blue-Ray disc. I would love to have all of my seasons of 24 on one disc, or all of my seasons o simpsons on one or two discs...that would be so nice.

It is my understanding that there are no blu-ray burners out there and there might not be anytime soon. And even if there were, there is definately no blank blu-ray discs. If DVD+RW DL cost roughly $6/each for 8.5 gigs of data can you imagine what media would cost at 50 gigs on a single side???

My friend is a programmer and he said that he thought there was just one commercial blu-ray burner, and that is is not even sold in the United States yet. Either way though, you are right, the media would be an arm and a leg, and certainly probably more than the actual game to backup would cost. But I am keeping ym eye on this and hddvd since this looks like the avenue we are going.

Your better off just waiting until the console launches. We still got a year and a few months to go until that happens so there's no telling what burner technology will be available NTM the needed time for modchip development.

LOL ....
Some of us older guys will remember paying $35+ for a blank CD-r
When DVD-r first hit the market, blanks cost more than a consumer DVD movie, DVD+RW DL may presently cost about $6 each, give it a few more months and they will be around $2 ....
Blu-ray, burners and media will hit the market sooner or later, and prices will drop like a stone ..

As a Game system manufacturer, you have to balance the security of the system, against the cost of the media, Blu-ray, may be nice, but if it costs Microsloth $50+ for the media on ramp up, it wont sell many games.
