Splitting dual layer onto 2 DVDs

It probably has been covered before (though i couldnt find anything) but whats the best way, if any, of spliting dual layer dvds into 2 single layer ones without loosing the logical sequence (namely subtitles and audio tracks). I guess subtitles are the most important since i'm trying to backup Akira Kurosava's RAN and its 2.5 hours so compressed onto a single dvd the qulity is crap.

Is there a software that splits and recreates subs automaticaly or can the methods used to split single layer dvds onto SVCDS and extracting and maintaining the subtitles can be applied to convert a DVD-DL into 2xDVD.
