Crazy PS2?

hey guys! new member here, so trying to start off w/ a bang :P

First of, I got a new (?) V4 PS2 which was like 2 months ago.
I bought GT3 and it runs perfectly.

Now, comes the fun stuff.
I bought a flip-top cover, installed it, and it was too noisy. So, I took it off, fixed it properly, and now its quiet like it should be.

I just bought an LG 4082B DVD-writer, and Verbatim Data Life (not plus) DVD-R's.

So, I go to copy my first game, Spiderman 2, I have the image file o-sm2.iso, and I use DVD Decrypter (at 1x of course).

I use swap magic 3.0/2.0(dvds) and put in the spiderman backup, and it takes like 3minutes for it to just get to the memory card check screen! What I hear, is the disc spinning, laser reading, then stopping. Spin, read, stop. Over and over.

So, then I decide to try to burn Psi-Ops. So I burn it using Nero this time, and it burns perfectly and works perfectly!
So im happy thinking it was just a bad burn, so I retry spiderman2 w/ nero, again at 1x, and this time it loads faster, but still skips...
I can hear the spin/read/stop process happening again for the re-burn of spiderman2, and while I CAN get ingame, the ingame help voice, stutters like crazyy, and all the intro movies jump and skip incredibly and I dunno why.

So I re-try psi-ops to make sure nothing happened, and then IT starts jumping and freezing! (which was working perfectly just before)
Then I burn Jak 2 and it works perfectly, loaded fine, no jumps.
And so I try Psi-Ops again and it was working ok, just taking some time.

So I have to ask... IS my PS2 possessed?

Whats the problem here?

Im very confused and need help...

Thanks in advance!

I had some Datalife DVD-R. They're crap - not what you'd expect from Verbatim. DataLife PLUS is the stuff you should use if you want to use Verbatim. Ritek G04 media is the best. V4's certainly ain't new - they're 3 years old, so it may be a combo of laser and media (if it's a V4 that is)...

EDIT: You got all the right gear except that crappy lid. Get a real mod installed in your PS2 - you won't have to use swap discs or anything then. Where do you live, i'm sure we could hook you up with an installer somewhere. God, I wish places would stop selling that slide card and flip lid ****e

Like lufc said, its probably possessed ..... errr I mean the laser in your V4. Its probably a khs-400b and on its way out. Run the laser test outlined on my site and post your results here.

hmm...

Ok, so you guys say it could be my laser huh?
I'll run the tests on my ps2 laser and post them soon as I do.

And also u guys said it could be the discs?
Datalife and Datalife plus makes THAT much of a difference?

Thanks for the help guys, I really appreciate it!

I'll try the laser test and see what happens.

(and also, I dont have a slide card, just the flip top! I thought i'd save $50 and get the lid... seems to work fine tho, I dont mind the extra waiting)

(and btw- I live in Montreal, Quebec, Canada... any guys here willing to help?)

Thanks!

laser test!

Alright, I just ran the laser test with Gran Tourismo 3 (original, greatest hits version)

- I powered up, the browser/configuration screen came, and I pressed eject.
- I inserted the game, pressed reset, it pulled the game into the system.
- It boots up sony of america, electrons swirl.
- It jumps right to Playstation2 Logo.
- 2sec after im watching the intro to GT3.

So I guess no problem w/ the laser at least?
(or do I have to try it multiple times to make sure?)

Could this be the cause of my V4 laser and crappy Datalife (normal) dvd's?
could that be all the fuss of my ps2?

Yes, it DOES make that much of a difference, because Datalife discs use CMC Magnetics layers which are the biggest heap of steaming crap you've ever seen. DataLife PLUS use Mitsubishi Chemicals (MCC) which is much better stuff...

laser model...

One last thing...

I checked my ps2 cover and its a 30001 R model, with serial starting w/ U3.
On ur site it said it means its a v4/5/6 ps2.
And if theres a screw in the expansion bay, its 5/6.
And guess what? theres a screw!

So there goes my guess as to it being a v4 ps2...
And the laser is a KHS-400C laser (written on it)

This all good info?

Thats the same game we use when going the laser test. its a fairly large games and this makes the laser work a little harder. If it went to boot the game with out going to the browser screen at all its fairly safe to say that your laser is in decent shape, go with Lufc's advice and try better media like Ritek GO4's.

Ritek & 2X

The posts that I have seen on Spiderman 2 suggest using the Ritek media with a 2X burn rate.

No problems fella.

Ritek G04 or DataLife PLUS media, and you'll be fine

That is good news. Means u have version 5/6 which is a much more reliable machine. Now Verbatim Datalife + for cd-r backups, Ritek G4 for dvd-r backups and ur off!

Impressed!

Well, I just got Verbatim Datalife Plus DVD-rs and tried to burn Spiderman 2 at 2x (only speed nero would let me choose, other than 4x) and it works perfectly!

Not only that, when the PS2 loads the game, I can hear that the laser is not struggling as it was with normal verbatim datalife dvds... It just sounds like a normal game booting up. (and theres no stuttering or jumpiness, im impressed!)

Funny how the dye and Metal AZO can be so good for the ps2 laser!

Thanks guys!
