Question on PSX backups

There are many interesting guides on psx copy world on the ps2, then utilities/guides section.

I want to know how PSX backups work with the PS2 (seems very hard to get info this).
Do I need to chip it or are there any BootCD's that will work?

I'm only interested in PSX backups.
Any helpfull answer will be most apprechiated.
