How do I set up my internet connection?

This may sound stupid but I got a new pc and I have dsl and I don't know how to hook it up. A serviceman came last time and hooked it up for me on my old pc. It can't be that hard can it? How do I hook it up. I have Windows XP.

I never needed installation disks for my other pc. My friend when he got a new pc he just plugged in his ethernet cable and it worked. I was just curious do I need to fix something in my internet options or lan setting. I checked the box that said auto detect settings and everything seems to be working okay but it just don't work. I'm lost.

Even better yet, just wait til the next business day and call your ISP's tech support and they will talk you through any changes necessary over the phone. Its really not all that complicated but Luciels right, we would need more info as already mentioned. You will need to know the dial out number for your DSL server too.

uh for normal dsl/cable you should have to plug it in and have the drivers for your interface installed. thats it. unless its aol broadband or someother forced program installing isp.

the DSL modem has a built in "BIOS" or firmware...it downloads the needed "BIOS" all by itself.

Here is how i did it.
(IE and XP)
go to the network settings(contol panel) and right click on your ethernet or "connection to local network" icon.(or network bridge)

mark TCP/IP and go to settings, all fields should be gray,if not click on the first "hole"

then go to IE settings and to connections and set it to "never dial"
then to LAN settings and there nothing should be checked.
go to the login page(if needed) and log in.

it should work...(it did for me)

PS. sorry for the bad english...im from the little country in the north,sweden...

Try this

Go to Command Prompt by clicking start Run and type cmd and type ipconfig if it shows something
0.0.0.0 in ip address then it may happen that your ethernet is disabled. To enable it go to Contol Panel, network and internet connection, and then Network Connections then you will see Local Area Connection, rightclick on it and click enable.if it doesnt solve your problem then that's your DSL problem.
