factors affect burning speed?

I checked in windows but i couldnt find where it says DMA or not so i went to bios but it has many modes, included ultraDMA4,ultraDMA5... i tried ulDMA5 but doesnt look like its improved the speed tho (before i changed it, its in auto mode)
