Flashing the onboard bios, commonly known as the TSOP, will do essentially the same thing as a modchip.
If you are really interested spend a couple weeks reading the tutorials and forums over at www.xbox-scene.com For now stick with a modchip. It offers greater range of functionality(multiple bios, enable, disable...) and is much less likely to fry your xbox.
