Without a doubt, V7 lasers work far better than any other PS2, even V9’s. I’ve already had to adjust a V9 and I’ve noticed all of them skipping on some CDR FMV’s! If anyone need to adjust the 2 white cogs on V9’s first try then both with the holes at 6 o’clock, seems to work best. The metal clip is also easy to remove, just push forward in both sides, then you can screw with the pots under the laser. I find they have the default values very high, around 1400 ohms, V7’s are usually around 1250, but V9’s are not C type lasers either, I think they might be R type compatible.

V9 Identification.

These consoles will either be Black or Satin Sliver in colour and have an Infrared Remote sensor located between the Power and Eject buttons of the front of the console.
SCPH Number will be from 50001 to 50004 Main board will be GH 023

V10 Identification.

These are the same as v9 up though the main mother board will be coded GH 026

The date code is 3C on NTSC V9's, should be different on V10's, haven't seen one yet tho.

Does this mean that the PS2 consoles without the infrared sensor is definitely not V9 or V10? Can anyone confirm the color of the Online Bundle box for a V7? I didn't know you could see the serial/identification number on the retail box, thought you had to take out the PS2 and look on the console itself.

The SCPH number is on the box too. You just gotta flip it around and look.

What about if the PS2 doesn't come with the built-in infrared sensor (where you need to use a separate receiver that plugs into the memory card port for a DVD Remote) - does this mean it's a V7?

Yes, or at least under v9.

Sweet, I didn't know about the IrDa sensor, was going to depend on the verison of the playstation 2.

I think I might go hunting for another V7, ... I'm just in a modding mood

So the only chance to see it is to open it up and check the GH number on mainboard.
Well, he will know the day he let someone mod it.

The only way I can get a V7 is to buy the PS2 bundle with the DVD Remote and plug-in IR Receiver (this means the PS2 doesn't have a built-in IR.) But this bundle would cost me like $40 more. Is it worth that much to get a V7 over a V9?

Aiites! Scored a V7 (SCPH-39001) from Circuit CIty. It was in an online bundle with the Network Adapter and ATV Offroad Fury 2 for $199. Same exact bundle in Walmart was a V9/V10, but returned it for the V7.

The thing is when i boot the V7, the fan/engine/disc player sounds a lot different from the V9/V10. Has a lower whirring tone, and is a little bit louder - is this normal?
