for you, what are most effective tools for cracking?

w32dasm, ida, hiew, hex workshop, softice, some handy tools although if you cant figure out w32dasm theres little hope of you mastering the others heh, learn asm first i guess

A brain, some nerves, pen + paper, some knowledge about the protection (not necessary), time...a couple a beers

it is an executable disassembler wich translates the compiled exe code into assembly language.

and the all important pencil and paper, i upgraded my pen to a pencil and never looked back, cos u can undo the mistakes in your notes .. beer, amongst other things tends to bring the mistakes flooding in heh

Upgraded? Why don't you use tippex to correct mistakes? (Sorry, I just couldn't resist, promiso *heh*) Seriously, getting drunk whilst reversing tends to screw it up...but a beer or two can be fine...yeah yeah, there're ppl who passes out after 1 beer Somebody stop me before I go totally OT...
