The problem could also be you Magic 3. Alot of people have problms playing GTA: VC and Kingdom Hearts with their Magic 3.

Yup, I had the same problem after making a 1:1 VC backup a few days ago. It locked up within playing it for like 15 minutes.
I used an Imation DVD-R. Gonna test it now with Maxell DVD-R. Hope it works!

I have a GTA Vice City back-up and have the same white label princos WITHOUT the writing and it has never froze on me, ever. I have an apple chip though... I agree with big hap that it could be the magic 3 conflicting with GTA Vice city. Sharpie's rock for writing on games!!!

magic 3 vice city and overheating
ok i know iam new to the ps2 scene but somewhere i read that magic 3 chips have a problem with heat if you dont use the propper wire size or maybe have a cold solder joint. doesnt vice city constantly load data off the dvd causing the ps2 and the chip to work harder and produce more heat. somewhere i saw a company was putting a thermal pad between the chip and the metal cover so the pad would transfer the heat to the cover acting as a heat sink and dropping the temp of the magic chip by over 10 degrees C. this stopped the games from freezing.
