What is the real size of 4.7gb dvd-r's?
I am trying to burn 4.5gigs of stuff on my hd and when i drag and drop all the files onto nero it says there is not enough space on my 4.7gb dvd-r.
![]() So my question is what is the actual size that these things are? I have the latest version of nero. Pioneer 104 dvd-rw drive Beyond Micro 4.7gb dvd-r |

A 4.7 dvd-r can hold 4.7 gig of data, of course.
BUT, the software has to add some additional information, and besides that, a file let's say of 2MB needs more space on the medium it is stored on than just 2MB. This is, where your "empty space" is lost.

Yep, comparable. Besides there is some addtional space needed for error correction.

Any clue as to the exact size of the 4.7GB disks?
Or does it really depend on the brand? |

It surely depends on the brand, but the manufacturers have to keep certain specifications, so they don't vary that much.
It depends on the size and the amount of the files you add to the dvd-r. Thus this question can't be answered in general, sorry.

No offense but DVD-R holds 4.38 gigs to be exact..They do not hold 4.7gigs..It's true that remaining sectors are porbably bad clusters but storage space is 4.38.

Nobody feels offended, because that is more or less, what I told him. It is quite normal that it can hold up to ~4.4 gigs, the remaining "space" cannot be used due to several reasons (post).
