What is the real size of 4.7gb dvd-r's?

I am trying to burn 4.5gigs of stuff on my hd and when i drag and drop all the files onto nero it says there is not enough space on my 4.7gb dvd-r. :(

So my question is what is the actual size that these things are?
I have the latest version of nero.
Pioneer 104 dvd-rw drive
Beyond Micro 4.7gb dvd-r

A 4.7 dvd-r can hold 4.7 gig of data, of course.

BUT, the software has to add some additional information, and besides that, a file let's say of 2MB needs more space on the medium it is stored on than just 2MB.
This is, where your "empty space" is lost.

Thanks for the quick response.

So it is similar in how fat and fat32 waste space?

Monty Burns 20-09-2002 08:42

Yep, comparable. Besides there is some addtional space needed for error correction.

Any clue as to the exact size of the 4.7GB disks?

Or does it really depend on the brand?

Monty Burns 21-09-2002 03:11

It surely depends on the brand, but the manufacturers have to keep certain specifications, so they don't vary that much.

It depends on the size and the amount of the files you add to the dvd-r. Thus this question can't be answered in general, sorry.

Thank you very much Monty Burns, you have been a great help!

No offense but DVD-R holds 4.38 gigs to be exact..They do not hold 4.7gigs..It's true that remaining sectors are porbably bad clusters but storage space is 4.38.

Monty Burns 25-09-2002 05:17

Nobody feels offended, because that is more or less, what I told him. It is quite normal that it can hold up to ~4.4 gigs, the remaining "space" cannot be used due to several reasons (post).
