Norton Systemworks 2004 Speed Disk very slow on Windows XP

I thought the built in defragger for XP was slow (hours) but norton 2004 speed disk just as bad. Since there is a ton of things running to make xp work (ctrl alt delete to see them) could this be loading down the system causing disk optimization to lag severely?

Or maybe norton isn't compatible with xp pro and the packaged defragger is a joke. It even ran slow on 98se.
