The solution is quite easy - you have to rename the game executable from avp.exe to avpg.exe (case insensitive). After that, you shouldn't have any problems running it.

Apparently, on some systems the game engine gets confused and thinks it's running a vanilla AvP and causes problems. When you rename the executable the engine recognizes that it's AvP gold and the problems go away.
I should know, it took me days to find about this issue and get my copy of AvP to work  . Also tested the fix by unistalling and reinstalling the game a couple of times - it worked everytime.

84.21_forceware_winxp2k_international_whql and now all is fine

Yeah, I just tried it on my about 5 year old PC (Intel P4 2 GHz, ATI Radeon 7000, video drivers from 2005 November) and it definitely works under Windows XP.
Another, similarly strange experience is when Blood 2 didn't work anymore (still under Windows 98): the main menu was blinking (bad double bufferring?). It turned out that newer nVidia Detonator drivers behaved differently than older ones... Great! <sigh>
