Updating old Burners

I have about 8 Pioneer burners ranging from 104-106. They are all Dvd-R burners....But recentlyI have been trying to backup some dvd+r's and I have found that some of the burners will not READ the discs....Yes...I realize that I can not BURN on DVD+R...>BUT that is my question....Is there any firmware updates that I can get to overcome this....perhaps I can convert them all to +r burners as well..I remeber back in the day you could hack the burner to burn 4x onto 2x media or something like that.......Thanx for any help you can offer
