What is Ping....

Hello friends,

I have a doubt. What exactly is this ping. why do we ping any site from the command prompt,What dose this ping exactly do. Can anybody tell me what is ping and why do we do it???

ping is a command. It allows you to check the website/server/comp is actually their and how long it takes for the packet(s) of information your computer sends to get their and bounce back...

It actually is a very good test for all the layers of the OSI networking model. It tests all 7 layers from the physical layer all the way up to the application layer. But I just probably confused you more than helped you. In short, It tests the connection between two points. Lower times are better.

If you can ping them...you're in business!

like goto Command prompt and type ping (space) www.fileforums.com and hit enter it will ping how long it takes to get to this site and back

Super good ping times....

I have extremely low latency when I ping 127.0.0.1, AND; was also told this is an excellent test of my OSI modeled TCP stack. I have no idea what my buddy was talking about, but it sounded ever so techie cool. I recommend that everyone ping 127.0.0.1 to see if their latency is at least as good as mine, 1,000,000,000 ms.
