What is Ping....

Hello friends,

I have a doubt. What exactly is this ping. why do we ping any site from the command prompt,What dose this ping exactly do. Can anybody tell me what is ping and why do we do it???

Thanxs...

ping is a command. It allows you to check the website/server/comp is actually their and how long it takes for the packet(s) of information your computer sends to get their and bounce back...

exactly that, so basicly the lower the ping, the faster its going :)

It actually is a very good test for all the layers of the OSI networking model. It tests all 7 layers from the physical layer all the way up to the application layer. But I just probably confused you more than helped you. In short, It tests the connection between two points. Lower times are better.

If you can ping them...you're in business!

like goto Command prompt and type ping (space) www.fileforums.com and hit enter it will ping how long it takes to get to this site and back ;)

Super good ping times....

I have extremely low latency when I ping 127.0.0.1, AND; was also told this is an excellent test of my OSI modeled TCP stack. I have no idea what my buddy was talking about, but it sounded ever so techie cool. I recommend that everyone ping 127.0.0.1 to see if their latency is at least as good as mine, 1,000,000,000 ms.:D

Ping isn't so amazing because nowadays routers depreciate ICMP packets (the protocol ping uses). So if a router is busy it will put the ping on a lower priority making the results less accurate. Its also getting more and more common for backbone routers to block ping altogethor.

Another thing for you to look out for is traceroute, or 'tracert' if your running windows.

You are all wrong!! Ping is the other half of Pong! :p The faster the ping the faster the pong and then the harder the return is to make! When you are the server you must hit a good ping to stop the returner from sending a good pong! As soon as one misses you have no ping nor no pong! Keep the ping pong happening as long as possible and you are surely going to enjoy your game a lot longer! :D
Hope this clears it up once and for all! ;)

EDIT: I did forget to mention that 11 or 21 are the magical winning numbers for Ping Pong! :p

Ping vs. Pong

Grumpy,

Excellent information, thanks for the enlightenment! You sound very knowledgeable, and I was wondering, do you know who would win between ISIS and BGP4 (some goddess I guess...'n' the Boredom Gateway Patrol 4).

Keep up the good work and happy new year!

:)

@duhme
On the day I would say BGP4. :p ;)
