UPDATE: for both BOOK.ini and debug.ini there's an entry like so:

[Common]
SaveDir={app}\W4\_SAVES

Can you make the installer update the relevant entry on completion of installation?

And if there is an option to (as in, you know how to do this via registry entries), the PlayWin.exe needs compatibility with Windows 2000.

EDIT:

Because the WorkingDir variable for the shortcut is empty, the game asks for a CD and refuses to launch. It works when clicking PlayWin.exe from the game folder so the entire problem stems from lack of WorkingDir variable set.
