Backup games wreck Dreamcast?
I've heard many people claiming that Dreamcast backups damage the Dreamcast's laser? Is this true? I know this has been asked but let's get a final word on the subject because i'm sure we all don't want to go and buy new lasers every couple monthes. So do backups wreck Dreamcasts or not? And what tips do you guys have in burning backups that work safely with the Dreamcast and don't cause the laser in the Dreamcast to over-work or burn out? Thanks a lot, help set the record straight.

all lasers wear out eventually, the question is more on how much (hour wise) do you play your dreamcast, not necessarily the backups ruining the dreamcast.
if the disc is done right then you shouldn't have a problem. if this is still confusing you then this is what i mean take two people player one only plays originals but plays 100 hours of games a week player two plays backups but uses his dreamcast only 50 hours a week player one will wear his dc out faster, now i know that i have commented previously on this saying that the lasers will wear out but from experience now i can say that if the burn is correct and is dummied then you should decrease the search time for the laser therefore not really doing damage to the laser or the motor which drives it. understand that lasers do wear out and you can't do anything about it. they are rated on a per hour life expectancy now don't take my word for gold it varies. ok,... so draw your own conclusions if you are hesitant about using backups then in my opinion don't use them, i am sure others would agree you are using these at your own risk....no guarantees regards webber |

Good reply Webber, thanks for the info. Anyone have anything to add? Perhaps some tips on burning games that are easy on the laser.

Only 1 game for Dreamcast wrecks the console and it is Crazy Taxi. Cuz Crazy Taxi is different from all other DC games thats why u dont see any autoboot copys of Crazy Taxi game. If u have the backup version of Crazy Taxi u notice that it is only around 184megs. Thats really small for a DC game. Well anyway a copied Crazy Taxi game is bad for the Dreamcast.

Is there any specific things you guys do when burning the games that make reading it easier on the Dreamcast? I want to make mine as safe as possible...

i think what Sobe means about crazy taxi is that it actually does not always show the proper texture maps and that is due to the data being too close to the centre of the disc that is why you autodummy or dummy the disc with useless info to move the game more to the outside ring of the cdr that way the laser has less to search and the textures stream a lot faster to the display, try it it makes a world of difference,
again if the game is properly autodummied there should not any search problems of screwed up textures regards webber |
