Slimline PS2 Heat Issues?
Hey guys...
I've been dealing with SpedMetal directly on this a little bit, but I thought I'd offer up the issue to the rest of you for some suggestions. I have a brand new Slimline PS2 pre-modded from NorcalMods with the CrystalChip. This machine boots any backup I throw at it straight away. It would boot both DVD-R and DVD+R, on Veribitum, Memorex, Sony, and Tayio Yuden. It will even boot DL DVD's (from my God of War and God of War 2 backups). However, as soon as the machine runs for 20 or 30 minutes, things go down hill. It will bring up the menu, and as soon as the game starts to boot, it hangs. Sometimes at the initial loading screen, somtimes at just a black screen. And say I keep the same game in the machine for an hour, it will start getting jittery and eventually lock up. The PS2 is on an open self, with nothing around it. It feels warm to the touch, but not overly hot in my eyes. I have tried it both laying down and standing up vertical. Last night I got it to work better, for about two hours with the window open behind it and 50 degree air blowing in on it. The laser seems to work awfully hard, too. I was starting to think it was a media or a burner issue. I just ordered 200 Taiyo Yudens, and a brand new Pioneer DVR-112 to combat this. I've also tried burning at different speeds, but that doesn't seem to change much. The only other thing I've done is put CD labels on the games... Maybe I shouldn't do that, but I can't believe that would have anything to do with this. Maybe I'm totally wrong. Any help would be so greatly appreciated it. I'm pulling my hair out here. And I'm pretty sure spedmetal is too, as I've been bothering him with this for a week. Thanks all!! |

It's true - CD labels can cause the discs to read incorrectly or not at all, so reburn with your Taiyo discs and then try them. Labels tend to absorb the heat into the disc, so after a while they lock-up and skip. The adhesive then deforms and is absorbed into the CD-Dye layer causing the discs to fail completely...
It may also be checking the fan in the PS2 is working as it should be. Opening it up to check its spinning would be a start... Hope that helps... LUFCfan

yeah, i've been having troubles myself with the PS2 slim getting "hot". i've tried different kinds of media, but all do the same. i also don't think it's the fan because original games play just fine no matter how long i play them. i myself have tried many things and failed more times then not. the best thing i got to work was to leave the top open. i have a swap magic disc so i can do that, but i'm not sure about what you would do having a chip. i just bought a PS3, so i shouldn't have to worry about problems like this with it for a while, since who knows how long it will be before we can backup games for them. i also have a bit more info on this stuff on my website, so check it out if you need info on other stuff. good luck to you and i hope this helps.
