Replacing an xbox NIC yourself?
Is it possible to replace the NIC card on an XBOX yourself? I've done a few searches for replacement parts, but can't seem to find any. We had an electrical storm a few weeks ago that took out my cable modem, and apparently the xbox as well. The unit is beyond MS warranty and they want $80 + shipping, their timeline was 6-8 weeks to get it back. Seems to me that near 1/2 the cost to repair a part on a console that is being replaced is a bit high.
Any thoughts? Chris |

Probably not. It is integrated and there is pretty much no way of knowing exactly which parts are used in the NIC. The mobo is also layered. You can try following the traces, and see if any fuses (if there are any) have been blown.
Are you sure the NIC has been blown though? I would be suspicious, as I don't believe cat5e cables carry power. Your best bet would be to purchase a used xbox for like 60 bucks and swap parts, if you must.

Pretty sure?
I've tested the lines and know that they are in good shape. The connection to the internet is up and stable. It stopped working the same night we had an electrical storm that also took out my cable modem so I guess I connected the two together.
At this point, the LED's on the NIC show no activity in either direction, and pinging it times out........ I'm open to other possibilities, but can't seem to come up with other options. Either way, thanks for the input, wanted to know if it was even an option before I open the virgin box up. Chris |
