problem ripping dvd dl

i'm trying to make backup copies of "curb your enthusiasm" since i watch them so much that i don't want them to get scratched up. i've tried all the software recommended on many forums. dvdxcopy platinum, alcohol 120%, daemon, dvd x rescue, and lastly clonedvd 2 with anydvd running. every time i've tried to rip this disc, i've followed the directions, and the ripping process gets stopped around 90%. at first it stopped at 47%, now it's 90%. and while i'm typing this, it just cut out at 86%. clonedvd2 says its a reading error so frustrating.

i don't mind making 1:1 copies and not cutting out the garbage if i don't have to. i'm using a dvd dl drive and have some dual layer discs to burn to. but since i haven't gotten to the burning step, maybe you have some tips that i'm missing. and remember that i'm a complete newb at this, so keep it simple.

this is my error from alcohol:
20:59:17 Disc read error at: 1489392
20:59:17 Disc dumping failed!
20:59:17 Error message: [03/15/00] - Random Positioning Error
20:59:17 C:\Desktop\curb3\CURB_YOUR_ENTHUSIASM_SEASON3.mds: Image file writing aborted!
