DVd to xvid simplest program to make 1400 mb file

Ok here is what I would like to do. I dont know if it's this simple or not but I can only ask. I have looked for a little bit on the forum but I didn't find the exact answer I was looking for. I have some dvd's that I would like to store on my hdd and I would like to convert them to xvid .avi so they don't take up much space but still are good quality. Is there a program where I can put my dvd in the dvd rom drive and then open the program and say convert dvd to xvid .avi. Thank you for any help in advance
