New DVD drive not reading backups..

Hi. I have been having a bit of a problem with my xbox lately. I kept getting the dirty disc issues but ignored them until the drive just sort of quit. My friend had accidentally hurt his xbox so he gave me his extra parts to try to fix mine. I put in his Samsung DVD drive and now it will read all my original discs but none of my backup copies of the same discs. My xbox is a 1.0 and the old DVD drive was a Phillips drive. I burn all my backups onto Verbatum DVD+R. I had loaded an original game onto the actual xbox itself and it still plays so I know it will still read backups. I can still ftp into the box and I can still watch my home movies on my pc through the xbox onto the T.V.

I was under the impression that the Samsung can read both DVD-R and DVD+R. Is that wrong? Do I need to buy another Phillips drive to use the backups of my originals?

Thanks for any help you can provide

"I burn all my backups onto Verbatum DVD+R"

That is the best xbox drive, people love it because it can read cd-r's without a problem and they almost never die. They are built to last. You could probably sell it on ebay for $80 at least.

However, with all their greatness, they simply do not read dvd+r's. Some people claim that theirs reads dvd+r's, but it must be a rare occurance. Anyways, you will have to change your media . dvd+rw's may work, but you might want to buy a single disk in case it does not.

Ahhh.. well at least I'm not crazy.. well.. not because of the DVD drive hehe. So should I go for another Phillips or actually go to the Thompson EEK! The thompsons are so cheap.. it's so tempting..............

I think I'm going to try to fix my friend's xbox so I'll probably put the Samsung back in it. He upgraded his hard drive without a mod chip in it. Not sure what he was thinking, but now all it does is the Christmas lights startup. I think if I put in a mod chip and unlock the drive then it might get to working again.

Thanks again for the help

For some reason I do like the Thompson. I have no idea why but my Thompson drive in my xbox 1.0 works perfect! It reads all DVD-disc (+ and -) but not CD's. That is however not a problem for me.

In my 1.6 xbox I have a LG drive and it is even better to be honest, no problems at all with anything for me.

Upgraded HDD with no chip? Then he won't even have a dashboard on the new hdd thus making it completely useless for the moment. Get a chip in there and use SlaYers or AutoInstaller Deluxe and make a complete install with MSDashboard as the HDD is completely blank ftm.
