USB 2.0 full speed instead of hi speed

Okay, this is the problem:

A friend of mine lately decided to get his 2 computers in a network.
As he only needs to transfer data between them he decided to get a usb 2.0 link cable
from anubis (typhoon).
One computer has a k7vt2 (asrock) mobo with onboard usb 2.0 ports (via) which seem to be properly installed and it uses win xp prof. sp1a.
The other one (ecs k7vza 3.0) has a pci usb 2.0 card built in (also via chipset ), with win2k sp4.

The software (super link) which came with the data link cable also is properly installed.

The actual problem is that this software shows one computer (win2k) is running only on full speed, while the other is on hi speed.

It seems to be impossible to install the via 2.0 driver on the win2k machine, cos device manager only shows a usb 2.0 root hub, but not a via enhanced usb 2.0 controller (like on the win xp machine).

I have tried almost everything now to help him, but I cannot figure it out.
At least, after installing the via usb filter driver the system doesn't hang / crash anymore, but data transfer speed is really sh**, well it could be better.

Does anybody have a solution ?

Is the 'Onchip USB 2' enabled in 'Advanced Chipset Features Option' in the bios?
Are the jumpers set correctly, this is on page 16 of the manual.

This appears to be an older motherboard as it is no longer listed on their site under products, it is however still supported for bios and driver updates.

I cannot determine if the USB 2 is full or high speed, it should be high speed but full speed USB 2 is no faster than USB 1 and there are a few caught out by the misleading statement.

High-speed = 480 Mbps
Full-speed = 12 Mbps

Thanks for answering.

It is not the onboard usb 2.0 on the k7vt2 that is giving him problems, it seems to be on hi speed.

The pci plug in card with via chipset at the ecs board seems to be the problem, even after trying to install the via drivers, the device manager still doesn't list a usb 2.0 enhanced, which is necessary. It only shows as a "normal" usb 2.0 device (not enhanced).

I have read a lot on this subject (e.g. via usb 2.0 chipsets are crap), but I simply cannot figure it out. I will keep investigating this stuff, cos the data transfer is that slow, that you can burn the data to a cd and even gain some time, that is useless.

It was the ECS I was referring to, it may have a plug in card, but there are still jumpers and bios setting to take into account.

It may just be that the older board isn't HISPEED USB 2.0 compliant. It might be using a 2.0 driver but not enhanced... why don't you just use an RJ-45 Ethernet crossover cable and 2 nics? It would be easier and much faster... 100BaseT, at 100 Mbps..... hmmm... interesting... The cable isn't hard to come by, can even make em urself, if ya got the stuff.... also, ya can get the nics for round $15/ cheap... However, some newer mobos come with an Ethernet adapter onboard.
