Novice to Burning..Please Help!

Hello everyone;
I'm sure this has been posted before, and it so, I apologize. I am new to burning DVD's and was hoping to get some help here.

I just purchased a computer that came with Sonic dvd burning software. I have some tv shows that I have downloaded, they are in avi format. I tried to create a dvd of the shows using Sonic but it said that the format could not be read/accepted.

Does anyone here know of any way to burn these episodes? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
