Editing dvd movies for website use

Hi!

Which programs can I use to rip a dvd so I can edit it for a website. I have a DVD from my client who wants video from it put on his website. I assume I have to rip it down to a VCD then rip it down to a AVI? Is that correct?! I'm totally lost I usually like to edit upwards no backwards...urgh..
Thanks for any help or suggestions!!
