PS2 Laser Problem??
Hey Guys
I lay my problem at the alter of the wise men of fileforums!! My 2 yr old light useage PS2 has been getting steadily worse at reading games. I'm not sure exactly what version only that its a v9 or v10. Its the silver one and was bought 2 yrs ago pre-modded with messiah 2 from kannections. Its only in the past 6 months that its been asked to step up and do some work but the last few weeks has shown a steady decrease in its reading capabilites. Tried cleaning it with a Scotch cleaning disk with no effect. Now I have read through the forums and I'm gonna guess you are gonna tell me my laser is on the way out which considering age and useage I dont regard as very good!! I think I read somewhere that early v9 had weak lasers. Anyway I am looking for confirmation of my diagnosis and more importantly good reliable, fast, value repairers in the UK or anyone in the N Lincs area that can do the job!! How difficult is changing one of these suckers??? Does it involve soldering?? Thanks in advance if you made your way through it!!! Andy |

If it's still working...
You seem to be one of the luckiest... I managed to kill my V9 laser in about an hour.
What you need to do, if the system is still working (although slow), is not to touch it, go and have a romeo mod (assuming that it wasn't performed) and replace the laser unit (it's not cheap). But If you have a Romeo modded unit, just read some of the guides on how to test the condition of your laser and if it's not that bad just play abit with pot resistances. You can avoid further damage by using HDLoader. Last edited by NoNo9; 07-03-2005 at 13:59. |

Replacing a laser does involve a little use of a soldering iron. (But only to remove the static joint). It isn't just a case of taking it out and putting a new one in. It needs calibrating and setting up for that PS2 - and if you aren't careful, you could blow your new laser on initial power up...You could try a recalibration on your current laser unit to get a few more months out of it. Instructions are all over the net...
