hmm 12 -16x causing me buffer underuns it used to b fine
i have defaged hardrive
chalie which option u got ticked cdwriter
eg mine id
diconnect is checked
synch datat unchecked
auto insert unchecked
dma unchecked
im win98 se

i not use 12x 16 x much
had knew motherboar proccessor fitted 2 months ago maybe they put writer on slave not master

I use the SCSI interface and very occasionally get the same problem. This can be due to a number of causes which I list (your settings are fine):

1 Burning too fast in conjunction with other issues in the below list. 4x is usually 100% OK and 8x 95% of the time

2 A background job in Windows has stolen the disk drive (like FindFast, Web cookie)

3 The HDD and the Burner are on the same IDE channel. The Burner should be the Secondary IDE Channel Master

4 The HDD is badly fragmented - you need to burn at slower speed definitely in this case.

thx charlie got manual out dma is for fast transfer
i rechecked it 16x is fine now 100% as long as i not do to much else while writing

Sometimes you can't control what Windows decides to do in the background. I think 16x is dodgy with IDE - when it works it works but the failure rate will be higher. Others may disagree but the media has to be pretty good in combination with the channels keeping up with the buffers.
