Completely Free Programme which allows compression

Is there a completely free programme which would allow me to compress an AVI movie to fit it onto 1 disc??
the movie is sitting at 830mb and my discs are only 700mb, its very annoying cos it has to stay on my HD.

Any quick answers would be very helpful indeed
