Error reading DVD's

I am using a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop with a dvd/cd writer (HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4240N).
It plays most of my DVD's but not all. The drive reports that it has no disk. When the disk is inserted you can hear the drive trying to read the disk, but after about 2 seconds it gives up?
Any ideas how I can get the drive to try longer to read the disk?
The disk works fine on the TV. I have cleaned the lens, and no noticable marks are on the disks.
