yes there was many different versions of the PSX. There was the original PSX that had like 6 versions, then there was the PS1 that had like 3 versions.

I would like to know as its laser has packed in (no suprise there), even for original games i have to turn it upside down or at an angle.

Would the lasers be universal?

Nope, ribbon cables were different lengths in just about every model. Ps1’s having the shortest. So you can’t just replace with any laser, it might not fit. With the exception of cable length and possibly the oldest 100X Stations, the connectors are the same and they are electronically compatible. Some places sold extensions for making the ribbons reach. The 750X stations had the most reliable lasers with probably the longest ribbon and they were the last with the expansion port, if I was looking for a replacement, I would look for that model station.
