Cleaned up your post a bit.

Is your dvd player capable of playing dvd-r? Is this your first attempt at playing a burned movie with this player?

No, I have made other DVD-R movies including Matrix Reloaded, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, and some other new releases. The player has been able to read those perfectly. In fact last night I made a copy of 50 First Dates to test it, and though it took about 10 seconds to load, it worked great afterwards.

sounds like it is either PAL or NTSC format and you have the opposite of whatever the disc is.
