PS2 Games

Is it true that most of the PS2 games wont fit on a 4.7GB DVD-R disc? Also, which program(s) do you recommend to back up PS2 games? thanks in advance.

99.9% of games will fit. RecordNow Max or Deluxe is the most recommended prog.

Apparently Pioneer may release firmware to support D-layer burning on the 106/107..
Although dont quote me on that as i dont know for sure.

I agree with Seany. It won't happen officially. Maybe someone like FLASH or Batousai who dop this sort of thing will be able to hack a Fw. but it sure won't happen officially - that'll probably mean a Pioneer A08/108...

There will never be any sort of firmware upgrade to support dual layer burning, official or not.

It is not possible to burn a dual layer dvd with a standard dvd burner. A dual layer dvd burner would require two completely different lasers in it to burn the two different layers.

Apparently a lot of research has gone into making a dual layer burner but is being ditched in favour of a new 10GB single layer format disc due to be introduced shortly.

The ps2 will not be able to read these discs as a blue laser is required to read them.

Regards

@ottoman: What you say it's not quite true. It doesn't require 2 different lasers. The laser will re-focus when jumping from Layer 0 to Layer 1.

Both Philips and MediaTek (one of the largest DVD chipset manufacturers and maker of the infamous DivX capable chipset that actually does QPel and GMC) are gearing up to deliver firmware upgrade to their existing DVD+RW chipsets that enables existing chipsets to burn dual layer discs. The upgrades are scheduled to be released in the next quarter and raise interesting upgrade possibilities because certain chipsets that can be upgraded are already used. However, even if the chipset is upgradeable, I wouldn't get my hopes up. Marketing people will certainly see dual layer as a way to sell you yet another burner even though it basically contains the same hardware.
So technically speaking, this MIGHT be feasible, but marketeers won't let that happen.

@seaneyb2003: Probably we will see dual-layer DVD±R/RW during Q2. BenQ has announced their DW830A model, hitting the stores in April. Also Sony has announced DRU700A, with a vague release time on Q2.

Hmmm... Well, ok. doom9 r well respected so will eat my own words.....for now. This has been discussed before and ruled out as a possibility as dvd burners burning dual layer is tough enough to concept, dvd burners doing it with a simple firmware upgrade?? Well, what do i know!!!

As for new disc format. Definitely a goer. 10GB on a single layer so 20GB on a dual. Would have to be a ps3 thing though.

Regards an thanx for an interesting thread (not the usual "i cant get this game to back-up)
