I recently purchased a Pacific Digital Black External DVD+/- RW burner for $200. It has 4X DVD burning and also dual format which is nice. Got it running through USB 2.0 and it works great. One great thing about this burner is that it is recognized by all my DVD burning software, which was a fear of mine, being external. Record now max 4.51, Nero 6 ultra, DVD X Copy.... They all work great. You usually can't go wrong with pioneer, as bighap suggested but you might be paying more $ for it.

I've been using an HP DVD 200e writer. (DVD+R)
It works just fine for the job. Get the cheapest!
