Help a Newbie mod ps2
Hello. I was recently directed to this board to find out more info about modding my ps2. I have read most of the relavent messages but still have the following questions if ppl can help.
1. My ps2 seems to be V1. It has 10 screw holes on the bottom. However it also has a electric warning STICKER (STICKER, not a stamp). Some sites have claimed that ps2 with STAMP on the bottom is a v4 but it does not address anything about if it's a sticker rather than a stamp 2. I have looked over all the differnet mod chips out there can not deciding an obvious choice for my ps2. I have read that neo2s hurt the lasers and Magic 3.6 chip have problems booting some games??? I'm currently considering Messiah 2 pro or DSM3. They seems to have solid reviews and I was wondering if anyone on this forum has any advice or have other chips in mind that i should use. Much thanks. |

Well the first thing to note is that you may mod it up... and your v1 may not read any +R or -R discs at all!
Beyond that, it's your choice between Messiah and DMS3, although my money is on Duo. - Gurm |

To test if your ps2 will play dvd-r is to make a dvd movie backup. Since movie backups dont require any modchips you can use your backup to test your ps2 and see if it reads dvdr.
As for what people think about the Magic 3.1. Most people in general think its crap. Get a Duo or Apple modchip. www.modchips.cc Tyler!

Your best bet is to sell the v1 and get a newer model, v5 or better. The console may play originals and movie's fine but still not play dvd-r media. I know this is not what you want to hear but its better to sell it than it is to mod it and find out it dont play dvd media no matter how much you adjust the laser. Then you are back to square one.If you still want to try it go ahead, its up to you but i dont mod anything older than a v5. Good luck with your decision.

I mod v4's, but only ones with relatively light use, and I make it VERY clear to people that it may or may not suddenly just stop playing backups.

Well I don't put long guarantees on my work - but then again I also don't charge as much as some of you, or do complete strangers' PS2's either.

well, thanks for the advice. I'm not looking to unload my old ps2 and get a new one. I'll consider getting the DUO chip once I have my new ps2 at hand.

geez guys. u make me feel so bad about my v4! oh well. the guy who did mine had to put a new laser assembly in! it was working perfectly before but after he couldnt get it to play nothing so he must have screwed somethin. anyway, my burns play fine- touch some wood (ps2 dies next day, kills self for jinxing!).
anyway, i reckon i will get a new ps2 i a year or so, so it wont matter. Last edited by patch god; 20-01-2004 at 03:11. |

i have a v4 with dms3 and it plays backups fine from what i know. some of them have issues (medal of honor) but i tried it at a slower speed and it worked fine. from what ive heard from here and my friend (who installed mine) every ps2 is different and it depends how much you use it, how long u play for, if u play dirty cd's on it, etc. if you have taken good care of your ps2, then i think you should be fine. i have had mine for about 3 months right now, and am loving it (ooo so many games). mine cost 100 dollars though, for the parts and instalation. i dont know if you were looking to spend that much. if the installer installs dms3 then he should be able to check our ur lazer and tell if tis in good shape. good luck.
