PSX Crackling/Distorted Sound
So I fired up my old PSX after a period of inactivity (went back to play Final Fantasy 9 and discovered that the PS2 dithers it to the point of making it look like I'm playing through a screen door!), and it started crackling and distorting the sound.
I figured one of the wires for the MOD chip (Stealth Mod, 2.7 I think although it MIGHT be 2.4, but I think it's 2.7 - it's been like 3 years since I opened up a PSX) was loose. I opened it up, and yeah, one of the wires was loose. Only 6 of them were connected anyway, which I recall was normal at the time... but one of those 6 had come away. I soldered it back on, and the sound was ok - for about two boots. Now it's distorted again, even though I've completely removed the MOD chip and all solder I put on the board. This is a 9001 Dual-Shock system. Any idea where I should start in my quest to fix it? Or is it just a lost cause? - Gurm |

No no - see, I already cleaned it all up and the sound is still crackling even with original games. Apparently it has nothing to do with the mod chip, and something else is gone loopy.

This does sound odd.
If it is the RF lead then it would have to be replaced nut it might be an idea just to try and clean the connection at the PSX end. If this fails then a new lead should be tried next, maybe try one of a friends before spending any money although they are not that expensive.

If by "RF Lead" you mean the wire that runs from the PSX to the stereo/tv, then THAT isn't it - I use the same lead all the time for my PS2, and I tried another one just for ****s & grins.
Any other ideas? - Gurm |

Earth wire? Grounding... hrm... yeah I'll have to double check that sort of thing, maybe the ground wire on the power plug is bad or something. *shrug*
I'll have to double check all the joints in the unit itself, but it's not worth TOO much time, since I can probably get another PSX base unit for $5-$10 at the local Electronics Boutique or some such. ![]() - Gurm |
