Data Burn Troubles - Thompson dvd reader

xbox v1.1 - x2 2.2 pro chip with 4977_repack. The dvd drive is labled as a "Thompson".

Now I can't burn a disk correctly for this xbox to save my live. It hates everything i burn. I have a Pioneer A05 burner and use the Ritek 4x with the g04 dye. I also have tried a few various other media but no luck also.

I use the RecordNow Max data burn method, and even lower the record rate down to 1x but again no luck.

The xbox reads the disks but at random points in the game it stops and give me the 'dirty or bad disk error'.

At this point I got to think it is my xbox's dvd drive that sucks.

Here is my question(s) -Are these Thompson dvd readers known to be crap, what media is best for them and should I look at changing it out?

Ya, they really are crap. Some people have good ones. I have a great one my self. I just got my greedy hands on a Samsung and I like it better.

Thomsons can be a real pain when it comes to reading disks. Go get some different brand DVDs and see what happens.

Or you mite want to consider buy a copy of a game online. See if it plays, than see who made the DVD and use that brand in your XBox.

It's not illegal to buy a copy of a game you own. If he listed a sight on where to get it, then yah, i guess it would be a bad thing lol.

Well technically it can be depending on certain views of it. But I wont go into that.

I ment that in a legal way. Don't buy a game you don't own. Buy a game you do own, that way it will save you from having to burn that game your self.

tks guys - rms - I think you are pushing the envevelop

The odds that one of those online games will work in my drive is small as the media I am using is still considered one of the best - right?

anyway - going to look at swaping the dvd reader. I got tons of these Ritek G04's (like 500) and they are what I need for my other applications - any suggestions on a source for a new/different dvd drive?

I'll start by trying to find a dead xbox and swaping. I assume that swaping the drive is fairly straight forward.

Oh yea - I'm using -r as the media - any better luck with these thompsons using +r?

Finding a busted one with a drive other than thompsons is going to be hard. They seem to be the most common drive (well, i can't back it up with stats, but i don't know anyone personally with something other than a thompson drive) and the worst.

llama.com

Thay might be expesive because they jack the price up if it's more of a demand (but everything there other than dvd-drives are priced quite nicely)

For those reading this thread - here is the moral of the story - some Thompson DVD readers suck major butt.

I am going to try the PC samsung drive replacement method.

http://dwl.xbox-scene.net/~xbox/xbox...s/samsung2.pdf

just did a web search and can buy a samsung SD-616T for $54 delivered.

Or I might just put in a big HD and play everything off the HD.

I wouldn't go to llama.com for parts even if they were the last dealer around. They are so expensive!

You mite want to search eBay. See them from time to time going for $75 to $100 USD. This mite be an easier option than tarring apart a perfectly good PC drive.

Hello , I also have a thompson dvd drive & there r some discs that it just wont read. I havent had any problems with the following Discs; Memorex +/- , Verbatims +/-, Phillips +/-, & TDK+/-.

Also when your using the Data method of burning make sure that your settings for udf DVD r as follows;

Recording type : Track @ once closed
File System Type : UDF - Up to 128 file length , any char, 8+3 tree bridge. U might want 2 try the iso method by using Qwix 1.01 then use rnm 2 burn the xiso image. So, give these a try & let me know what happens.

u can learn something from everybody .
