Could be a bad install or your laser is shot. Does your ps2 play dvd movie backups?

What brand media you using? Try some Ritek or Verbatim if you havn't already. If those don't work it is time for a new laser or ps2.

Oh, and whilst we're on the subject of lasers, I aren't too happy with mine at the moment - I think we're going to need a replacement.
 I have no plans to replace the console (partly because it cost me too bloody much, and i'm skint), so would the V1-4 lasers on Kanection fit my V4R? Trust me to get the dodgy inbetween version. Thanks a lot. The link is here. Thanks a lot... LUFCfan
