Ethical question

Hoi there! I've got an ethical question here for you. Now i've BOUGHT ALL my games ... however, I've now been introduced to the ability to back-up my games. Actually I've only had one success (Soul Calibur) and 2 failures (NCAA2004 & Splashdown).
My question to you guys that might know ... if I have actually bought the games that I own ... and I succeed in making a back-up. Would it be illegal for me to sell back the original to EB (NOT full price) and get a lil discount on buying another new game full price @ gamestop or EB?
Or another possible twist ... if I could ever make myself wait for the price to drop on a used one like say ... SSX 3 (good luck on that! i don't think I could wait for a used one to come back) and then sold my original game back and used credit for another game while keeping my back-up ... would that be considered illegal ... even though I DO pay full price for my game?
What do you guys think? I'd really like to know. Preferably from a definitive source instead of just opinions

You must own the original to have a backup. If you sell, trade, give away your origianal, you must destroy your backup.

You are LEGALLY ALLOWED to make a personal backup of an Original Game CD as long as you are the owner of the Original Game CD.
You are NOT ALLOWED to sell, rent or give away any backups of copyrighted Games CD's, as this is not allowed by Copyright Laws.
You MUST DESTROY any backups when you don't legally own the Original Game CD anymore (e.g. selling or giving it away)
Before making a backup, check in the supplied manual or on the back of the CD, if there are special conditions for making a personal backup.

What can I say? Almost any person who has a modchip and a cd/dvd writer has burnt some games, which they don't own the original for. It's a fact. Every single person I know who owns a ps1/2 has burnt games. The only people I know who don't are the ones without modchips or writers.

I'm not admitting to anything here, no one else will either. If u want to burn some games u don't own then go ahead. If u get caught then its your problem. However, there is a 99% chance that u won't. If every person in the world got done for game/music/program piracy, there would be about a billion poeple behind bars. Thats a fact.

I don't think there should be advice like that in these forums verging on illegality, although everyone in the industry would recognise you're point as undeniable; but still...

Always an interesting issue that is brought up. I've seen in several peoples signatures (not just here), touting HUNDREDS of CD Backups. Now I hope those are for other people, because if not then theyre breaking the bank. I would respect a site that simply said we dont DISCUSS piracy here and left it at that, then making a point to present an air of innocence. I mean come on. Whos fooling who?

Having said that, the legality of the issue is clear, if you dont have the game you shouldnt have the backup.

Consider this, Sony is a multi – billion dollar corporation with their hands in all the pots, they licenses and buy intellectual property. They mass produce music, video’s and video games for pennies per unit and then sell their 30 cents worth of plastic and paper media for $12-80 or more. They build and sell the playback hardware as well as RECORDING hardware and BLANK MEDIA. They truly have all their basses covered. It cost many times more for a pirate to burn one copy than it cost Sony to mass produce that one original copy !!

This same company has been know to buy back their own media from retailers when prices got too low and have copies destroyed rather than have the price lowered. They allow their retailers a very small markup on media/software and next to no markup on hardware. I know some business owners and I can tell you that Sony retailers have no say whatsoever on what they sell.

Ever see that Infomercial where they are “giving you a free” PC tutorial CD? You only pay a Shipping and Handling charge of like $6.95 !? They have these CD made for well under 50 cents including packaging, I’m sure it costs less than a buck to mail, and another dollar or even 2 (not likely even a buck in reality) for labor and their still making a fortune, for a stupid Video CD!!

In a world like this, with the music industry crying about imaginary profit losses from people downloading and sharing mostly crappy quality MP3’s, sampled off of their TV sets full of compression artifacts. Billionaire corporations controlling the courts and changing laws, taking away our freedoms so a small percentage of the worlds rich can get richer. When it comes to ethics, you need only to answer to your own conscious In this crooked world .

You all may be right. But here in FileForums we have to abide these laws whether they are wrong or right. Because every so often there are people who would like to report us to authorities.

So when I say "No Pirate Talk" I mean it!

They may only cost pennies to make, but you also have to factor in the thousands of man hours and dolars it takes to create a single game.

They would still be filthy rich selling CD’s for $7 a piece. Give the producers a $1 profit per unit (1.50) give the programmers $1 (2.50), the middlemen and the retailers $1 profit (4.50) Pay shipping bills (5.50) toss aside some $ for future developments = 7.00. Do you think the programmers get over 14 percent of that $50 game on the shelf? I doubt it. Do you realize how many more millions and millions of titles the would sell at $7, and not to mention the reduction in piracy this low price would cause. But then Sony would loose profits in the burner division with less CDR media and burners being sold. After all, Sony IS the pioneer of the CD burner industry.

The bad part about it, is that I ACTUALLY OWN over 150 original PS2 games... (Please dont do the math, it depresses me enough)......

I usually purchase 1 PS2 game per week.... (unless money gets tight)

I thought my collection was bad.....

A friend of mine OWNS over 350 original ps2 games (I have seen them).....

Thats how I decide what games I want..... (By playing his...hehe)

True... It can be a VERY expensive hobby....

BUT, there is actually people out there that have tons of games.....
