Some sort of encoding problem?

A few days ago I went to put one of my movie files onto dvd but for some reason it wouldn't encode in ulead dvd movie factory. I thought this odd and grabbed Tmpeg plus to see if that would work but when I went to encode it at mpeg2 it turned a 24 minute avi file into an hour long mpeg. After the clip ended it just went to a black screen and encoded that as well. When it was finished I got a choppy picture and no sound. To make matters worse I have no clue what's wrong. I ran it through a few avi repair programs and they say on one little piece of the index is screwed. I really don't know why the whole file would double in size and completely get rid of the audio. I was curious about what had happened and if there was a way to fix the avi file?
