soul calibur 2 trainer question

here is the problem i have the crappy flip top ps2 (a version 2, i know.. i am broke, in college and have stubby fingers ).

i applied the +78 trainer to fix the swap magic 2 boot problem. now the blue bar comes up on the swap magic screen and it looks like it is going to work, but the screen just stays black.

is this a trainer problem or have i not backed up correctly ( i have backed up a number of games and have never run into this problem before - so i think i might have applied the patch wrong - if that is possible)

any suggestions are helpful aside from getting a better mod.
thanks

LMAO @ stubby fingers joke.

I need to ask, did you get any errors when applying the patch? I have noticed that when I backed up a lightly scratched disc and then tried patching it I got an error. At the time I was using Blindwrite Suite so I think the errors were copied too. Thus making the error with the patch data.

I tried again with plain old CDRWin and got no probs with the scratch and the patch applied without errors.

In other words, if in doubt try a different backup program.
