Infrequent Freezing question and boot query

Hi, just a quicky, since I had the magic 3 chip installed, it takes about 3 attempts to get games to boot (originals and backups). s this normal? I would have thought originals would still boot instantly.... often it just goes to the insert disc screen or the memory screen. (I have a v7)

My main question though, the only game I have burned is dark cloud 2, and during the 8 hours or so that I have clocked, it has frozen about 4 times, all on loading screens (not good in an RPG) . I am using Shintaro DVD-Rs (made by princo, slightly cheaper). Could the freezing be a problem with the cheap media? Or would it be a ps2 problem? Any insights much appreciated,

Thanks,

Marcus.

It very well could be your media. Princo uses a very light purple colored dye and that makes it harder for lasers to see. Get yourself some Riteks they should only be about 20 cents or so more a disc.

Don't Riteks have a purple dye?

The dye is due to the material of the photo-sensitive layer and the purple tinge doesn't give the laser any problems. Indeed the dye is the key to everything in so far as it has to react to the narrow focus laser beam within the time it fires. There will be a gold or silver reflective layer behind that - usually silver on DVD-R.

When the laser reads the disk, at lower power than when it burns it, the opaque bits are those burned by the laser and they are sufficiently opaque on any colour DVD-R dye to block reflectivity unless the burner did a bad job, in which case it would have generated an error on burning with the read-after write check.

So it's just as likely to be a ****ty Magic 3 doing its naughty trick as it would be ****ty media. But the dye colour won't be the problem - just the chemistry of the dye on that brand.

Charles, if you would reread my post I said "very light purple colored dye". Maybe I should have stated that Riteks dye is a lot darker.

Do stop calling me Charles. It's not my name!

Light purple, purple, schmurple dye - it's not the colour of the dye that's in question with media. It's the actual chemicals that make it react to the burning laser that's important.

Crap media abounds with poor dyes. Light purple isn't enough to differentiate a good DVD-R from a bad one.

Anyways, your problem is likely your cheap media. Let it be known that the magic 3 is known for freezing problems as well.

Charlie is the nomme de guerre but Chuck's fine. Just not Charles. He's the Prince of Twats!

Anyway, Bighap agrees with my diagnosis, so there!

You guys KILL me.......

Ok.... I will go with Tyler on this one..... (If for no other reason than to cause controversy )

I have to admit.... The darker the dye color the better the PS2 tends to read the disc.... This has been my personal experience.... Whether or not their is a scientific reason as to why, I cant answer......

BUT.... IMO.... If you have two discs side by side and one has a darker dye than the other, use the one thats the darkest.... It will produce better results.... At least this is what I have found from personal experience....

OK... Now that Ive said that.... You guys can abuse me!

That's all cr*p!! I've given the technical explanation - the dye colour is irrelevant save where it denotes particular chemicals. Those chemicals have to react with the laser burner's light to form the opaque pits.

Any colour can be crap chemical. Or good.

What part of "MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE" and "MY OPINION" did you NOT understand.....???

I really dont care or know about the "technical" reason behind it.....(and never claimed to)

All I care about is if it WORKS or NOT.....

And IN MY OPINION the darker the disc, the better it seems to work....

This was my opinion and was never claimed to be FACT..

You have your "technical" view and I have my "personal user" view.

Yeah but Chuck doesnt seem to understand giving people a simple answer. He likes to give his encyclopedic answer to everything. Its almost like he has everything saved somewhere on his pc and just copies and pastes the answer.

Ive never had any problem using any darker purple disc. But I have had problems using those lighter colored ones.

Yep - that's me. The Encyclopaedia. No quibble there - no need to cut & paste it's direct access all the way.

Vague stuff such as "dark" or "light" .. confusions. Precision, precision and Dust.
