If the exe has triggers in it in addition, then the cracker will have to remove these triggers manually as well as the protection. If they aren't removed then when the game is played, because the exe has been modified, the game will behave strangely making it unplayable. For example - in Toca Race Driver cars would jump up and down on the grid or steer into the walls.

Yeah but the securom triggers are more complicated. Killing the protection isn't that hard but finding all the triggers is a real bitch.

Would any of these triggers actually be invoked by backing up the game? What I mean is, would substituting the original EXE with a fixed one also take care of all these triggers?
I want to try to back this game up, my CD writer is a little old now though I managed to successfully backup CM4 the other day which I believe uses the same protection? So should it just be the same procedure using Alcohol 120% btw my writer is unable to measure the DPM on the CD. I do not mind using a fixed EXE, which I know I will have to use - any suggestions on making a basic functional backup, so that I can retire the original CD and Case to my shelf

As long the fixed exe has all the triggers removed - a lot of the game's with triggers have had fixed exe's released that haven't had all triggers removed. Most of the games have usually seen another group release a crackfix
If you dont mind using fixed exe's then it's very easy to make a backup - just make sure you get a working crack.
