Crossover cable length/verify errors

I am going to buy a crossover cable in a couple of days for my big Xbox mod that I am prepareing to do(I'm going to use a NITC card). I read a tutorial that saids it needs to be short or else I will get verify errors. I haven't heard about this any where else, so is this really true? The reason why I am asking is because my Xbox is about 18 feet away from my computer so I want to get a cable approx. that size.

When I did my first game I used an 80 foot crossover I made.
No I didn't make it just for that; its original use was to link my XBox with a buddy's so we could play Halo on two TVs from one side of the house to the other. Wireless was working okay, but every time the phone rang we would lag. Seeing how both my phone and my wireless run in the same 2.4GHz band…
Plus it was the only thing I had laying around at the time.

Never had any errors or probs with it, no errors or any thing. Only prob I had, was my buddy’s dogs chewed through the first one I made while I was over at his house once…

Just don't get a cable over 300 feet (100 meters), that’s when you will have real probs.
But remember the shorter the better.

Yes, rms knows the magic number is 100 meters for Cat5 UTP cabling. Around 100 or longer the signal is unreadable.
