You don't need to, but if you want a problem free chip get the Messiah 2. Magic 3.x has its share of problems.

Yep Messiah 2 is the best one.

I have had mine for a couple of months now and it boots ALL PSX/PS2 backups and originals.

Messiah 2 or Apple.

Messiah2 is proven, tested, etc.

Apple is half the price and several people are VERY happy with them, but they don't have the wide testing and userbase of the Messiah2.

Don't get Magic. It's tempting, since you can find them generic for like $15. Just don't do it.

i notice many are reccommending the apple mod. i've had mine for a while and i'm starting to have many problems with it. some of the 'good' games wont boot. and a few games freeze up at specific points in the game. i'm thinking about tossing my apple mod in the garbage and getting a messiah 2.

It is not the chip that is the problem. Probably your laser. What version ps2 do you have and have you tried cleaning your laser with a laser cleaning disc? And what "good" games are you talking about?

it says scph 39001 ser. u649576 date code 2c.

i've never cleaned my laser. many games work flawlessly, so i would not suspect a dirty laser.

games that wont work: dues ex, rygar, ffx, hitman, max payne, silent hill 2 (which causes problems on all systems i think).

games that freeze: summoner2, cookies and cream, ephemeral fantasia.

What media are you using and do the originals of the games you have problems with work? I would still try cleaning the laser....

Definitely sounds like a media issue to me.

Especially with the games he listed.

What cleaning disc do u recommend bighap?

A m8ee of mine has had a couple of minor loading probs and has gone of to find one.

I thought u couldn't go wrong with a sony dvd cleaning disc as it made by the sony gods themselves, and if it all goes wrong u have a good argument 4 them giving u a new ps2!

I think pretty much any will do. I heard the good things about the Memorex one though. I remember somebody posting a while back about a conversation they had with Sony. Sony said not to use laser cleaners cause it was bad for your ps2. Greedy @$$holes. They know that these discs work and fix a lot of problems you might be having with your ps2. They tell you not to use one cuz they want you to go buy a new ps2 instead.

i would not think it would be a media problem because i have other games on similar media that work perfectly.

the games i list freeze at exactly the same point every time. does that point to a dirty laser? i would not think so. it seems that a dirty laser would cause *random* freezing.

It could still be a media issue.

Just because some games do work doesn't mean the media r any good.

I used to use BulkPaq ( They suck) and this backed up most games fine.

However if it's a game that makes the laser work hard, they r crap.

Some games to try would be:

GTA Vice City
The Getaway
Max Payne
Time Splitters 2

If all these work flawlessly and load at the same speed as the originals then u have a good media.

Also some cheap media kind of decays after a while, U burn a game and it works fine then a couple of weeks later it won't even boot.

I don't buy into this experiment with different media crap and see what works for you.

Go with brands that r already tried and tested with PS2, Ritek and Traxdata.

If u r using any other media then u cannot cancel out a media problem.

Good luck
