Voltage to the laser question...
This might be in the wrong forum but I saw it posted about here so here goes...
I read in a post below that the NEO family chips send 5 volts to the laser instead of the normal 3.3. Is this true of the no solder pnp key chips as well? I have a magic 3 but my brother has the no solder... I wanna know if his is being damaged at all. Also, I have an older ps2 that I broke (first moding attempt :-) that I Installed a STAR mod chip on It had a capacitor as well, I believe that the STAR chip was very similar to the neo brand, am I right in this? |

The no solder mod doesnt effect the laser, its basically just a tray switch. Not sure about the star mod.

A no solder mod connects in between the ribbon cable and the reset, eject buttons. It doesn't inject any type of boot code,The PS2 reads the boot code off the GS2,AR2 it then allows the tray to open without the CPU knowing it for backup swapHere's what ths pins on the chip actually do, in case you wanted to know:
PIN #1 = supplies + (power) to the chip PIN #2 = sends SCE signal out to PS 2 PIN #3 = PS 2 drive tray pulse tells the BA5810FP chip whether to expect a drive tray open or close PIN #4 = checks/signals RESET button on the PS 2 PIN #5 = closes PS 2 drive tray PIN #6 = opens PS 2 drive tray PIN #7 = checks if game CD is PSX/PS 2 (If PS 2, immediately stops SCE signal & restarts when a "tray close" is seen. If PSX, it stops after about 15-20 seconds) PIN #8 = supplies ground to the chip Last edited by Warlock; 02-12-2002 at 17:58. |

no i mean how did the old neo chip boot up? did it work like the pnp key one? where you hold down eject and swap it? or was it some other type of deal.
I figured the pnp chip was just a drive popper... it works though! So is the neo better or is the pnp better? why would the neo need to change the laser power? doesn't the neo need the gs2 to boot as well?!? |

The no solder is better than a neo chip, Look at the boot factoids BG has posted in the PS2 forum.
