Whats the proper way to rip a DVD movie?

I need to know how to properly rip a DVD movie(dvd9). Then i can open that with IFOedit to rid of unwanted parts. I have DVD decrypter and Smartripper. Wasnt for sure on the settings and what files to save. any help appreciated. thanks

Since 5 days i use this guide:

The results are perfect and plays like a charm on my settop,except for some sub probs.And for the author part i use ifoedit 095,which can now also author a dvd.
