Is it dead?
I have been having some probs with my beloved PS2. It has been chipped with a NEO 4 for about 12 months now, and last week was the 1st time i decided to use a DVD backup with it. When using a NEO 4 to play a backup DVD u have to put in an original DVD on the browser screen holding the eject button, and when it has read the disc u release the button and the disc pops out. I used it successfully the first time, and then 2 days later i tried with another game, and accidentally released the button when the game was playing and it the disc popped out while it was still spinning. Since then i have had major trouble reading any original game and all original DVD based games?
Has anyone got any ideas as to why or how this happened? Thanks 4 the help RiVal_D

Its possible you have a weak laser, 12 months on a neo4 chip has had to do some laser damage. Have you tried cleaning the laser??

Does the laser go bad only on modded units or it goes bad on all (or most) PS2s as time goes by?

Your laser will go bad regardless if you have a mod installed or not over time.
